Question: Upon gutting my cupboards, I discovered an old veh fire extinguisher, (which I "acquired"... OK, stole, from HM Gov, in the early Eighties!!) It's the old, "green bottle" type, that you held upside-down and struck on a hard surface to "set-off"! It is complete with mounting bracket and still fully charged, and it still has the rubber cap over the nozzle! Does anyone know of any military restorers who would like such a piece of original equipment? (It is marked 1974)
Answer: -BCF extinguisher were (unfortunately) extinguished by the Montreal Protocol which bans their sale. Rather sad as they were probably the best fire extinguisher available. I'd keep it in your kitchen. -The manufacture of Halons (commonly known as "BCF") has ceased world-wide and in certain countries, (not the UK) the use of Halons is now illegal. Existing Halon systems remain acceptable within these regulations in this country although every effort should be made to ensure that new systems are charged with an alternative approved extinguishant. However it must be noted that in accordance with the Montreal Convention, the use of Halon (BCF) will no longer be allowed in the United Kingdom after 1.1.2003. When undischarged Halon systems are removed for disposal these MUST NOT be vented to atmosphere. Bottles containing Halon should be returned to a local fire extinguisher service point or to a manufacturer. Disposal advice may also be sought from local Environmental Health Offices.
