Question: We are looking at handheld computers for our Fire Prevention Division to use for inspections and I wonder if anyone had any experience with these units. We are hoping to be able to include a calendar, phone index, inspection form, bylaws for printing, fire codes and linking capablities to the office. We also want to be able to download the information back into our server for Suppression to use at calls and for statistics.
Answer: Hewlett Packard makes "Palmtop Computers". I know. I have one. I have a 100LX with a 1 meg flash card (stacked to make it 2 megs). I use it for alot of my Fire Dept. activities. ie: My protocols, structure triage for wild fire. Those are just a couple of things I do with it. I also know that after the OK. city bombing the FBI (or whatever law enforcement agency was in search mode) was given about 100 of these units with (I believe) wireless modems to help in the search for the suspects. My 100LX has an appointment book, 3 phone books, a database, Lotus 123, a memo pad (this is like a word processor), HP calculator, World Time, 5 games (Poker, Tetris, Space Invaders, Tiger Fox, Hearts & Bones. All these games do not come with the Palmtop.), and a host of other things. The 200LX (current version on the market) also has Pocket Quicken. Visit Hewlett Packards homepage to get more details. (homepage to follow). There is alot of after-market software for these handy little items also.
