Sort Of Smoke Detector

Question:

When I got up this morning I noticed that one of my smoke detectors was chirping about every 30 seconds.

I know that this usually signals that the 9 volt battery needs replacement. I removed the old battery and did some other chores but noticed that the smoke detector still kept chirping (without a battery) which I thought was strange.

I then inserted a new battery but the thing still chirps about every 30 seconds.

What's going on?

Answer:

The terminals may be dirty. Clean them with the eraser end of a wooden pencil. Try a new battery. You can test a 9V battery by sticking your tongue across the terminals. It should have a moderately strong sensation and a strong metallic taste. Compare to the dead battery.

I had a f(r)iend accidentaly do this to a *90* volt battery once. It lit his lights thoroughly. ;-)

If all that fails to solve the problem, bite the bullet (as opposed to licking the battery) and get a new smoke detector. If you get one that is physically bigger then the old one, it will hide the faded/clean spot on the ceiling.
