Question: Thanks for all who replied to my previous post regarding "Smoke Detector Requirements - New Construction". I live in southwest Ohio and I spoke with my inspector. Here is what he requires: - Smoke Detector in each bedroom with a built-in sounder - Smoke Detector outside of each bedroom area with a built-in sounder - Smoke Detector on each level with a built-in sounder - Heat Detectors are optional. They do not require a built-in sounder. - ALL sounders must go off if ANY smoke or heat detector goes off. - Power supervision is required - Battery backup is required I will be using a Caddx NX-8E. I will be using 6 smoke detectors. I will be using 3 heat detectors. I assume given the number of detectors that I should use 4-wire detectors due to the current draw. Can I meet these requirements? If so, what brand/model of smoke detector is required? What brand of heat detector is required? Do I have to connect the smoke and the heat detectors to the same zone?
Answer: Q: If so, what brand/model of smoke detector is required? A: You can use Sentrol 449CST smokes. They have the built-in sounders and can be made to all go off at once. You'll also need the ESL405-05 power reversing relay. Q: What brand of heat detector is required? A: You can use any of a number of brands. I usually use Edwards rate-of-rise type heat detectors. They're faster acting than straight, fixed-temperature detectors. They come in two flavors 135º and 194º. The lower temp model is for the garage, laundry room, furnace room, etc. The high temp model is for the attic. Q: Do I have to connect the smoke and the heat detectors to the same zone? A: No. In fact, you it's better to keep them separate though they will function if wired to the same zone.
