Question: I'm sick of the smoke detector going off when cooking. In the States they have smoke detectors with a silence button and 10 yr battery life. Anyone know where to get one in Hamilton, New Zealand?
Answer: Yes - what you describe is what Housing New Zealand are installing in their rental properties. I have one in my hand at the moment and the label reads (among other things): "LIFESAVER SMOKE ALARM with HUSH" "Model #0916" "Fymetics (Hong Kong) Ltd 7/F, Tin Fung Industrial Mansion 63 Wong Chuk Hang Road Aberdeen Hong Kong" "Sensitivity 1.26 percent/ft ± 0.38 percent" I believe the NZ distributor for the alarms is Chubb. A call to your local Housing New Zealand office should elicit more information. You could, perhaps, also give some consideration to relocating the offending alarm so that it is out of the line of air circulation from your cooker — also, perhaps, think about better ventilation in your kitchen when you are cooking.
