I'm going to be writing some public information press releases for the upcoming Fire Prevention Week. Has anyone heard what the theme for this year will be or gotten a look at national materials yet? On a related note, our department holds an open house on the Saturday of Fire Prevention Week at a local shopping center. We do demos, give rides, burn a car, sell hot dogs, etc. What do other departments do (other than station tours) for Fire prevention week?

A: I've seen it but can't rememberit exactly. I think the theme is about kitchen fires- something like 'take it off the heat'. Anyhow, I will try to bring it in to work tomorrow or email tonight from home. Its on the cover of the latest NFPA catalog (which I got twenty copies of at the station last week). Also, I expect the free information packet- including suggested press releases- should be out soon. Check with whomever picks up the mail at your station. They usually send one free copy to every department in the nation. Maybe we could do some collaberation and post on the net. I would be willing to put anything developed out on my web page for those interested . Let me know if you are interested in collaberating on something like this. A: Been there, done that except we do it at the station and the hot dogs are free (we usually only have a couple hundred people). Last year we also did a free fire extinguisher class. Plymouth FD does similar with a car burn, extrication and even the residential sprinkler trailer (through the state fire marshalls office- I can get you info on this too if you are interested.
