Question: Dunno how I ended up with this - could have been a car boot sale. Anyway I've had a small green Halon fire extinguisher languishing in my flat for at least 3 years. It still appears to be in good shape as I can't press in the small pressure indicator in the base by thumb pressure. Assuming eventually that it passes its used by date (how long are these things supposed to last?) how do I get rid of it? I'd assume that I can't just chuck it into the wheelie bin? Given that Halon is dangerous if inhaled in enclosed areas, could I get away with discharging it in a wide open area (eg a field) and then discarding the container in the garbage? Would there be any environmental implications to my doing this?
Answer: Get in touch with your local council, the one that is responsible for refuse collection (either county council or unitary authority) and ask their advice because halon is an ozone layer destroyer.
