Fire Prevention Week Activities

Question:
Fire Prevention Week Activities Ok brother and sister fire fighters, can you help us out here with a very unscientific survey? What are your department's plans for FPW? Schools, Community Events, Publicity? How involved are you in your elementary schools? Any formal education efforts in injury prevention? Besides RiskWatch? Does anyone in your department care about education, or is just something they feel they have to do? Do you have a smoke house to use? Do you have a full-time education coordinator?

Answer: We will be working like mad. There are too many kids in our area to fit them all in withing a week. so we go all of october and into november. We get all the 5th graders 4 times a year- 3 classroom exercises and then 1 trip through the fire safety house. for fire prevention month(s) we try and get all of the rest in with a lecture and 45 minutes in the trailer. Having the versatility of the fire safety house is nice as we can do seniors, kids, people with handicapps etc... dont llimit yourself to the quoted phrase we have every year. "fire drills the great escape" open it up and give them everything they can handle. in todays day and age there is no excuse for just setting some rigs up at a school and having the kids look at them. if youre there why not teach them. learning what a firetruck looks like wont go real far in there is a fire, but EDITH will. So to all please take time this year and teach the kids, they deserve it.
