Now this seemed innocuous enough but I remember thinking at the time that people were in fact trying to watch the display and not wishing to answer questions and arrange fire safety checks just then

Question:
Last Nov 5th my family and I went along to a local firework display. All was going well and everyone enjoying the display. About half way though a fire engine pulls up on the service road and several fireman disembark and wander into the crowd. About 20 mins later, when the display was nearing its climax, one of the fireman appears in front of me and says… "We have been *tasked* by (something I couldn't make out), to ask people if we can arrange a home fire safety check". (Aside: Is "tasked" now I verb I wonder?). Now this seemed innocuous enough but I remember thinking at the time that people were in fact trying to watch the display and not wishing to answer questions and arrange fire safety checks just then. So I polity said "No thanks". We are pretty safety conscience anyway and have fire alarms etc check fuse rating and cables, have gas fires checked regularly. etc. He then says "In that case I'll put that down as a REFUSAL".

Answer: Can't help you about the data collected etc, but as part of a Government thing, the Fire Service now has to be seen to be pro-active in fire prevention at all levels. I do actually find it strange that on one of the most busy nights the crew actually had time to do this type of activity, Crossposted to uk.community.firefighting where I'm sure somebody can give the ansewrs you seek, possibly quicker than a FOI / DPA request and cheaper
