Question: This morning while I was in the shower, Rae put some of her plastic dolls and toys inside an electrical baseboard heater. Fortunately I had a short shower(!!!), because one doll melted and smoked, and the other one was well on it's way. Our whole house is heated this way, and Rae has subsequently put more toys inside other heaters (with me right behind her to retrieve them). In the afternoon I went to our local fire department and spoke with the fire prevention officer. While he was helpfully intended, he was able to provide no useful information. He did advise me that he didn't like baseboard heaters and proceeded to tell me several stories about fires they had started . He then told Rae that fires are dangerous (this to the child that thinks that fire is merely something on candles that you blow out on top of a birthday cake). He then dangled in front of Rae a nifty red plastic fire chief hat, and said he would give it to her if she promised not to put any more toys in the heaters (just what I need - more plastic - groan). And of course, his lecture has been completely effective...Not! So...any suggestions? (either environmental changes, or things that changed your child's behaviour..any thoughts appreciated)
Answer: sounds like this could be a terribly long winter for you! My Mother-in-law's house has this kind of heating system though they normally use their central heat. Her baseboard heaters are completely covered (like a long box along the wall) except for the underneath ... maybe you could buy some like this? Of course the whole "box" is hot to the touch when we do use the baseboard heat. I wish you well.
