I figured it'd be a smart idea to have the fire extinguisher handy.

Question:
So I decided to start my 69 bug today for the first time in a while... Since I was using a fuel line to a can, and jumping the starter (lost key), I figured it'd be a smart idea to have the fire extinguisher handy. I poured a small bit of fuel into the carb to get things going, and apparently spilled at least as much as I poured in (you know where this is going)... I turned it over, and it started right up, then backfired through the carb and went up in impressive flames... I gave it a quick shot with the extinguisher and had it out before any damage was done, but it sure woke me up, and reminded me why it's good to be prepared. Just thought I'd pass that on, to remind everyone to be careful...

Answer: Glad you were prepared Craig. I also have learned to always have an extinguisher handy, and not just a teeny one. Learned from so many years spent around boats, they seem to catch on fire as much as bugs. My dad & I were fishing one time and saw a guy in a brand new, $30,000 boat with the back end smoking heavily. We went over and whipped out our fire extinguisher and put it out. He had tried to put it out with one that looked like it should've been on a keychain. He had used it up in about 2 seconds and didn't even slow the fire down. Glad there was no damage to your bug.
