Question: like to know if say there's a Fire Alarm Box in a school and outside and someone pulls the Alarm outside how can they tell it's the Box outside or the one Box in the Building I hear alots of Fire calls on my scanner ?? Does Fire dept Heandquaters have a way to find out what Alarm is going off at Headquaters??
Answer: Most fire pull stations have their own 'ID', if it is a newer alarm the servicing alarm company will know which pull station it is since most systems nowadays are computerized. Back before the advent of computers fire alarms actually had a telegraph or morse code signal they sent out, giving either a number or a location and dispatch would look it up on the list to see where it is at. Some pull stations just give a building but most all pull stations will have a unique location. I'm not going to say that there may not be a time where you can't tell weather it is in the building or out, just that the majority of alarm systems ID each sensor/detector/pull station. Check the local library for books on fire department history and there should be a few that cover old telgraphing alarms.
