Question: Just bought a two famaly house and wanted to put in a cheap smoke alarm system. I have thought about going wireless BUT when I called around they wanted like $115 for each detector. I then thought I could go wired. Any ideas? Could I wire up detectors that you can get at a store to ring off a remote alarm?
Answer: Q: Just bought a two famaly house and wanted to put in a cheap smoke alarm system. I have thought about going wireless BUT when I called around they wanted like $115 for each detector. I then thought I could go wired. Any ideas? A: Not particularly outrageous, but if you shop around you might shave off a couple bucks. Q: Could I wire up detectors that you can get at a store to ring off a remote alarm? A: At the average store. No. If you are thinking of the battery operated detectors that sell for 5-10 dollars at the local home improvement store definitely not. A decent hardwired smoke detector that is designed to operate with an alarm system will probably cost around 35-50 and 50-75 installed depending on particulars. In addition. The detectors need to be connected PROPERLY to a control panel rated for residential fire detection, and the installation, monitoring, and dispatch particulars must be verified with the local building and fire authorities.
