Question: Is the TTC's record as one of North America's "safest" transit systems in peril? At least no one was killed in the August 6, 1997 fire between Greenwood and Donlands Stations. Yet, this again raises safety concerns. My kid is in Toronto right now and will be using that section of the subway - my father lives near it. Hearing familiar street names and subway stops on the national news in relation to a potential tragedy is a little jarring. Any comments?
Answer: Even the transit systems that are perceived to be unsafe (and the TTC is far from the head of that list) are many times safer than the alternative of driving. There are hundreds of millions of passenger-kilometres travelled every year on buses, subways, and streetcars, and hardly any fatalities or serious injuries. Wasn't last year's subway crash the first passenger deaths on the subway since opening in 1953 (other than suicides)?
