I'm having a house built and would like to use the builder's AC smoke detectors (interconnected) with a DSC Power832 alarm system

Question:
I'm having a house built and would like to use the builder's AC smoke detectors (interconnected) with a DSC Power832 alarm system (or any other system that you would recommend over DSC's). Can it be done?

Answer: -Yes, technically it can be done, but it's a bad idea. Buy system smokes. They're supervised, designed to work with your alarm control, and are much more stable than those cheap builder's smokes. You'll need to run wire for them too.

Still planning to do it? OK, place your right hand approximately 6" from your face, and draw it across your face quickly several times in a firm, slapping motion. Repeat until you reconsider.

-BRK sells a relay that will enable most smoke alarms to interface with an alarm panel. This is *not* the method I would recommend though. I would suggest pulling four conductor 18 gauge wire to the same electrical box your builder's electrician will use to wire the AC smokes. After the installation has passed inspection, I'd replace the AC units with either two or four wire smoke detectors powered through and supervised by the 832. Cap off the AC wires but leave them in place. I'd also suggest wiring for heat detectors in your garage, laundry room and the location immediately adjacent to your furnace/hot water tank.

The 832's an excellent choice for a panel, by the way... You may wish to consider exploring the Ademco, Napco and CADDX lines (depending on whether you envision employing some home automation goodies in the future)...
