Question: A few days ago, there a fellow here in Ontario, drove his car to the storage lot where his Class A motor home was stored. He hitched up the car as a toad to his motor home and proceeded on his way. He noticed something amiss (probably smoke) and pulled over to investigate. The toad was on fire and he couldn't get to the hitching mechanism because of the fire in order to separate the two vehicles. As a result both vehicles were lost. Perhaps the use of a large fire extinguisher would have at least saved the motor home. Does anyone carry such a fire extinguisher (not those little extinguishers that seem to be everywhere.)
Answer: What is "large"? A 10 lb extinguisher is big and is good for about 10 seconds of continuous use (that's right about 1 second per lb of chemical/powder). Look at your watch for ten seconds. Could you put out any, but the smallest, fire in ten seconds? Ok, so you opt for a 20 or 30 lb extiguisher? It's *big*, but where are you going to put it? Where will it be easily accessible? Oh yeah, don't forget, it is only good for 20 to 30 seconds of continuous use .. can you put that fire out in 20-30 seconds? Ok, get a 50 lb .. it's *really big* and comes with wheels because you can't lift it --- where you gonna keep *that*? Oh, don't forget that the weight designation is just the chemicals .... It's really heavier than that because the container is heavy, too! I think you will find that our travel and home extinguishers must be employed immediately at the beginning of a fire. If you don't catch it quickly, your chances of saving your RV, towed, etc are slim ..... You might as well borrow a hot dog & marshmellow, and a stick, while you wait for the fire department. Or you can use the time to call your insurance agent.
